Most kids are ready to start structured beach volleyball training between ages 9 and 11, though children as young as 7 can begin building fundamentals through play. At MBsand, our Manhattan Beach and South Bay programs officially welcome players from age 10 through 17, with training customized to each child’s physical development and skill level — not just their age on paper.
If you’re a South Bay parent watching your kid dig their toes into the sand at the Manhattan Beach Pier and wondering if it’s time to sign up for real coaching, here’s what our coaches want you to know.
Why Age 9-11 Is the Sweet Spot
Beach volleyball asks a lot of a young body — jumping, diving, sprinting through soft sand and tracking a ball in open-air, sun-and-wind conditions. Around age 9 to 11, most kids have developed enough:
- Coordination to consistently pass, set and serve
- Attention span to retain multi-step coaching instructions
- Physical endurance to handle sand training, which is significantly harder on the body than a gym floor
- Social readiness to thrive in partner and small-group drills, which beach volleyball relies on far more than indoor volleyball
Younger children (ages 6-8) can absolutely start having fun with a volleyball on the beach — but this stage is better suited to unstructured play, family games or short introductory clinics rather than formal club training.
What Training Looks Like at Each Age

MBsand coaches guiding players through age-appropriate drills in Manhattan Beach, CA
| Age Range | Focus |
|---|---|
| 7–9 | Ball familiarity, hand-eye coordination, fun-first introduction to the sand. |
| 10–12 | Fundamentals: passing, setting, serving, footwork on sand. |
| 13–15 | Positional skill-building, competitive play, tournament exposure. |
| 16–18 | Advanced strategy, physical conditioning, college recruiting preparation. |
This is exactly how our programs at MBsand Manhattan Beach and MBsand South (Long Beach & Huntington Beach) are structured — coaches group players by both age and skill level so no child is over- or under-challenged.
Is My Child Too Old to Start?

Patty Dodd, Beach Volleyball Hall of Famer and Director of MBsand in Manhattan Beach
No. We regularly get 14- and 15-year-olds who have never played beach volleyball but come from indoor volleyball, soccer or other sports. Athletic kids with a competitive background often catch up quickly. What matters most is coaching quality in those first few months — which is why MBsand training is led by USA National Team-level coaches, including club director Patty Dodd, a Beach Volleyball Hall of Famer.
How to Know Your Kid Is Ready
Ask yourself:
- Can they follow a coach’s instructions in a small group setting?
- Do they enjoy being outdoors and physically active for an hour or more?
- Are they comfortable with some structure and repetition (drills), not just free play?
If you answered yes to most of these, they’re ready for a trial practice.
